Photos from the Army Box
Years ago I came across an old metal box in the attic. Inside it I found items my father had saved from his time in the army during World War II. There were several Purple Hearts, photos and other documents he had kept. Here are a few of the photos I scanned more than 20 years ago.
The ones with Grandma's writing on them were probably sent to him to keep him up to date with family news, such as his brother's wedding and the birth of his niece. After the fighting in Europe and Northern Africa ended, he was stationed in England for an extended time. This was when he (and many other US soldiers) attended college. He told me about this, but I can't remember if it was Oxford or Cambridge.
During this time he dated several local British girls, including one Lily Green(e), that he was quite serious about. I wonder if one of the unidentified women here might be Lily. (The Roanoke photo studio tag is a bit puzzling.) Also, it's cool to see Grandma and Walter's front porch swing in Robin Gray's infant photo. Oh...and it looks like Bernard wrote the caption on the group wedding photo.
